Dust Mite Thresholds
Techniques have been developed that help establish allergen threshold levels. With dust mites, a level of 2 µg/g of Group 1 allergens is considered a risk factor for sensitization. A level of 10 µg/g of these allergens can cause symptoms in sensitized individuals. *IIAQC Newsletter October 2007 Vol.1
Dust Mites and Fish Tanks
Surprisingly, dust mites have been found in the dust around fish tanks, probably because of the moist environment. It is interesting to note that dust mite colonies are often maintained in laboratories on flake fish food. This finding may go against what has been a popular pet alternative for kids with asthma and allergies. So if there is a fish tank, the space around it should be kept clean and dry. And be careful where that fish food goes when its feeding time. *IIAQC Newsletter September 2006 Vol.1
